Even the most relaxed, unfussy weddings are, underneath it all, one of the busiest days of your life. There are guests to greet, family members who haven't seen each other in years, a running order to keep to, and a hundred small decisions that only you two can make. It's a brilliant day — but it's rarely a quiet one. Which is exactly why we always try to build in fifteen to twenty minutes alone together, wherever the day allows it.
We've shot enough weddings now to notice a pattern: the couples who get a short window alone together, away from the noise, tend to look back on their day feeling like they actually experienced it, rather than just hosted it. It doesn't need to be long. Fifteen to twenty minutes is usually enough — just long enough to take a breath, look at each other properly, and register that you actually got married today.
We're not precious about when or how this happens — it might be a slip away during the drinks reception, a walk to the car park under the pretence of "getting something," or simply stepping outside together while everyone else is distracted by the buffet. We keep an eye on the schedule for a natural gap, suggest it quietly, and then get out of the way. No forced walk-and-talk, no direction beyond "go on, we've got this covered."
Because nobody else is there, these moments tend to be the most honest of the whole day — no performing for guests, no awareness of a camera beyond a quiet presence a respectful distance away. Couples regularly tell us, months later, that this short unplanned pocket of time is one of the things they remember most clearly, even though it lasted less time than the cake cutting.
